WHITBY, ON - Four people, including an infant, lost their lives Monday night when a police pursuit led to a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 401 in Whitby, reports
Global News.
The fatal wreck, which involved six vehicles, unfolded just east of Highway 412 and followed a robbery call at around 7:50 p.m.
According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Durham Regional Police officers had been alerted to a robbery at an LCBO off Highway 2 in Clarington and were following a U-Haul cargo van as it drove erratically through the area.
At one point, the van entered Highway 401 in the wrong direction at Stevenson Road in Oshawa. Not long after travelling westbound in the eastbound lanes, the van was involved in a crash with at least five other vehicles.
One occupant from the van was pronounced deceased at the scene, as were three other people–an infant and two adults, aged 60 and 55–from another vehicle.
First responders rushed a fifth person to an area hospital for major injuries.
The SIU, which independently investigates officer-related incidents resulting in death, is working to determine the circumstances of the robbery and the police pursuit.
