5 Warning Signs to Help You Avoid Traffic Accidents in Ontario

Some traffic collisions are unavoidable. Warning signs and signals may precede other accidents. Understanding certain “danger signs” may help you avoid such traffic accidents in Ontario.

Below are five warning signs that may help you to avoid being involved in an accident.

1. A Car in Poor Condition

It is OK to judge another driver based on the condition of his or her vehicle. A car with dents, scrapes and other damage may indicate the driver has been involved in previous fender benders or accidents – though it’s hard to say whether the previous crashes were that driver’s fault. Also watch for noticeable safety issues, such as a car with low tire pressure, missing mirrors, or broken headlights or taillights. A driver who does not pay attention to such details also may be inattentive at the wheel.

2. A Car That Rides in Others’ Blind Spots

Steer clear of any vehicle that travels in other vehicles’ blind spots, including your own. This driving habit easily can lead to a highway collision in the event someone changes lanes. If you see this happening with two vehicles ahead of you on a busy road – for instance, the 401 – safely and efficiently maneuver away from the cars.

3. A Car That Drives 20 Km/H or More Below the Speed Limit

A driver who travels far below the speed limit may be intoxicated or distracted. The same applies for a driver who is unable to maintain a steady speed. Beware of any vehicle with a pattern of fast acceleration or deceleration. Also watch out for drivers who hit the brakes frequently for no apparent reason.

4. A Car That Tailgates You or Other Drivers

Beware any vehicle that fails to leave a safe following distance, whether it is a driver behind you or a driver who is tailgating another vehicle. Such a driver may be driving while intoxicated or distracted (texting or talking on a cell phone). Tailgating also is the hallmark of an aggressive driver – such driving can lead to accidents. Do not engage an aggressive driver. Instead, quickly and safely move away from his or her vehicle.

5. A Sudden Stop in Traffic

A traffic collision on a busy highway can have a chain effect. Other drivers can become distracted by the activity and fail to see stopped traffic ahead. Be sure to check your rearview mirror frequently when you approach highway congestion. Be prepared to pull onto a highway shoulder or into another lane in the event the driver behind you is not paying attention to traffic.

What to Do if You Are Involved in a Car Accident

Many of the warning signs listed above are examples of driver negligence. You may have the option to initiate a negligence lawsuit if you have been injured in an accident caused by an intoxicated, distracted or otherwise reckless driver. Your potential award would be in addition to the statutory Accident Benefits to which you are entitled.
